Fourth Quarter 2014-2015
The Megamind Press
In Math class, we have been working hard and putting in a lot of effort into learning our one digit multiplication tables. We have also been reviewing how to solve word problems and only use the necessary information in them. We continue to work on perfecting our two-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping.
Science has been very interesting this quarter! We have learned about how the different rocks and soils are formed and where in the world we can find them. We have also been learning about the weather and the different types of clouds that we are able to see based on the weather of the day. We have enjoyed creating art projects and posters to show what we have learned.
Language Arts News
In Language Arts, we continue to learn and create new words and their meanings by adding prefixes and suffixes. We have been practicing hard on remembering the rules of the vowel and consonant sounds of our weekly spelling lists. We have also been learning about foreshadowing by reading the book “Shiloh”. It was a lot of fun trying to guess what would happen next in the story!
Social Studies News
Social Studies has been a lot of fun these past nine weeks! We have learned about our communities and other communities around the world. We have learned about their differences and their similarities. We have also learned about the government and the three branches of our United States government. Most interestingly, we learned about the differences between everyday items throughout history. We were amazed to see how weird cars, clothes, and telephones looked 50 years ago!
Special Events News
Group has been fun these last nine weeks because we are learning important lessons and practicing skills that will be very helpful when we are faced with unexpected changes in our lives. We continue to practice and learn about ways to cope with our feelings and emotions in appropriate ways. We spent some time reading a book called “Who Moved My Cheese?” which taught us the different ways to handle happiness and disappointments when changes happen in our lives.
The last grading period of the school year brought with it many fun and exciting special events to our class. For the Easter holiday, we celebrated by coloring eggs and going outside to search for candy filled eggs! One of us was lucky enough to find the golden egg and win a special prize! We also enjoyed a field trip to the Akron Rubber Ducks baseball game. We are anxiously awaiting the fun field day activities that we participate in every year. We are also excited to celebrate Memorial Day and show respect and honor the men and women of our armed forces.
Catching Fire by: Dakota, Xavion, and Randy
In “Catching Fire”, Katniss starts in the Victory
Village. Then she and Peeta go on the victory tour from district to district until they reach the Capitol. Peeta asks Katniss to marry him. Later in the book they returned to the Arena. In the arena, Katniss and Peeta join in a team with Finnick and a woman Mags. Mags dies in a blistering fog. Katniss is still trying to save Peeta’s life.
Math by: Austin, Spencer and Jakob
In Math this term, we learned about fractions. We learned to add, subtract, multiply and divide them with the same denominator. We also learned to reduce them to their simplest form. We learned that sometimes they are pieces of a whole like a pizza. They can be parts of a set, like marbles.
Field Trip by: Cody
On Wednesday, May 20th, we went on our last field trip of the school year. Everyone had to earn the trip by meeting certain criteria. We left for the Akron Ducks Stadium at 9:30 and got back around 1:00. There were thousands of students and staff from other schools. All students who earned the trip had to get permission from their parents. During the field trip everyone needs to be on their best behavior, the rules are very strict.
Science by: Austin, Cody and Christopher
In Science we have been learning about the digestive system. The mouth crushes food and it begins the digestive process. The salivary glands help turn starch into sugar for the body. The esophagus pushes the food into the stomach like a go-gurt tube. The gall bladder produces enzymes to help breakdown the food.
The Garden Project: by Michael and Joshua
On April 23, we started the plants. We planted the five most popular plants from last year’s garden. We planted Beefsteak, Roma, Grape Tomatoes and 2 types of Zucchinis using peat pellets. They all grew under grow lights. We measured them on May 18 and recorded the measurements. The tomatoes were 5” high and the zucchinis were around 8” high.
Social Studies: by Jackson
In Social Studies we learned about the Revolutionary War. The Patriots were fighting for their freedom and land. A patriot named Paul Revere warned the people that the Red Coats are coming and that how the Revolutionary War began.
-Geometry Class....By: Breanna and Caleb
In Geometry class we are learning about properties and attributes of triangles in chapter 5. This chapter includes angle and triangle bisectors, medians and altitudes of triangles, mid-segment and Pythagorean theorems with triangles, indirect proofs and inequalities in only one or more triangles, and now finishing off chapter 5 section 8; which is applying special right triangles. And after we've completed all of chapter 5 we will take a test over all of the sections in this chapter to show our math teacher that we understand what we have just learned.
-Language Arts....By: Breanna
For this grading period our class has read a couple of stories, which includes “Learning to Read and Write” written in 1845 by a former slave named Frederick Douglass. This was about how he overcame the complications of slavery and found his way to freedom through his slave masters mistresses teachings of the alphabet. This story is truly inspirational to all those who read it. The next story was pretty similar to Douglass'. This story is called, “Superman and Me” written in 1998 by an Indian boy Sherman Alexie. His story is about how he taught himself how to read by looking at his father’s comic books and making his own story up by looking at the pictures the panels show. And since society thought Indians were too stupid to learn anything he figured he'd prove them wrong. And so he did. He says as I quote him in his story, “I am lucky. I am trying to save our lives.” So, after reading the stories we were given a test over them. Currently we are about to read a story called, “Fahrenheit 451” written by Ray Bradbury. This is mainly about how the society are restricting their people on what they read, just like how parents restrict their kids on certain things or how schools restrict their students on what to bring into school to read or even talk about during school.
In group we talked about friendship, how to make friends, emotions/feelings and how to cope with those emotions/feelings. Next, we learned how to solve and deal with our problems with and without assistance and/or help and how to identify the current problems at hand. Also, we learned that it's important to know how to calm ourselves down and master our own personal relaxation techniques. This is important in life because there won't always going to be somebody there to help you deal with your problem(s).
For this grading period in my government I've learned about different types of governments. They include Ordered Government; this is the need for an orderly regulation of their relationship with one another which created local governments. The next one is Limited Government; this was an idea that the government isn't all that powerful. The last ones are Royal Colonies, Proprietary Colonies, and the Charter Colonies. Lastly, I learned about the Articles of Confederation and it stood for in the U.S.
In this class we've learned a lot, such as symbiotic relationships, food chains and food webs, in which we did a project; we had to draw how the energy is passed through the food chain to the other 16 organisms we had to draw. Also, we've learned about different kinds of organisms, ecosystems and deforestation; this includes decomposers, producers and consumers. Currently, we have talking about the human organs. That includes, but not limited to, muscles, skin cells, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and so on. So, that is what we have been learning in science class so far.
-Group....By: Jordan & Jocelynn
In group we have been working on anger management and stress. During anger management we have been working on trying not to react to negative things in inappropriate ways. Lastly, during stress we have been working on making stress balls and learning about how our stress is formed.
-Math....By: Shaydon, Triston, & Jeremy
In our Math class we have been working on division and multiplication, along with more of subtraction and addition. Some division problems are easy and others are harder for us, but they're fun.
-Language Arts/English....By: Daniel
In this class we have been reading a book. This book is called, “Because of Winn-Dixie”. This book is about a girl named India Opal Buloni. In this book India's dad, who is a preacher sends her off to get groceries from the Winn-Dixie grocery store. As this girl headed to the store she came across a stray dog by the store. So, after India, her dad, and the now named stray dog, Winn-Dixie met they all become really close to one another and became a family.
We have also been learning how to correct sentences that were written incorrectly and also making our own sentences with the spelling words we were given.
In science class we have been talking about moldy food and if it's safe to eat. One of our experiments we tried to mold food but failed to do so. We also learned about the erosion on the Grand Canyon and how it was first started by water, weather, and gravity. What I hope we can learn is what tectonic energy is and how it is made by people, animals, and many types of machines. Also, about how and why gravity is made.
-Gym....By: Cole, A.J, & Jonah
For this class we have been going outside to the basketball court and to the track for gym and free time. Some things we have done with our teachers, Mr. Asa and Ms. Paige are playing soccer and football and getting better at throwing and catching the balls. We love having gym and getting free time.
For this class we have been watching musicals like Annie and Mary Poppins. We have also been listening to different types of music. I really enjoy music class because it's a lot of fun.
-Field Trip....By: Xavier, Zech, & Cameron
The field trip we went on was to the Akron Rubberducks baseball game. We had so much fun! All the students were allowed to bring in $5 for food and souvenirs. During the game there was a home-run and we got to hear the hotdog song.

Special Events News
The third nine weeks brought many special events to our class. Our class has enjoyed a Valentine’s Day party with our peers. We really enjoyed making and labeling our valentine’s for our friends. We also worked hard to earn the bowling field trip. The bowling field trip continues to be a favorite for our class! We are anxiously awaiting St. Patrick’s Day where we will be enjoying a scavenger hunt to try and find a pot of gold!
In our daily group meetings, we have been learning many things. We have spent a lot of our time learning the importance of following directions and showing respect to others as well as ourselves. We learned the meanings of many feeling words and also associated different colors to those feelings. We have also discussed the importance of responsibility and have been engaging in numerous team building activities within our group.
Mrs. Mucha’s Middle School Room

We have begun reading the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy, the main person in the story, crushed the evil witch of the west. Then the munchkins were happy and they had a big party. Dorothy went on the Yellow Brick Road and found the Scarecrow. Then Dorothy and the Scarecrow went into the woods and found the Tin Man. Later on in the woods, they met the Lion and then they got out of the woods. They had a dinner of fruits, and then in the morning they had to build a raft. It took a couple of days to make it.
Geometry by: Austin
Geometry is an interesting form of math that has more than just shapes and sizes. Within those shapes are angles, areas and perimeters. Personally, I think that shapes are boring, but don’t let me get you down about it, shapes can be interesting! For instance, did you know that trapezoids have one pair of parallel lines? Think about it, without geometry we couldn’t build houses or hotels because we wouldn’t know how long or tall to make them. So do you get it? Geometry is very important in our everyday lives.
Bowling Trip by: Cody, Jackson and Michael
This article is about the bowling trip and it was fun for everyone. The name of the bowling alley was called “The Fast Lane” and it was very retro. On 3/5/15 the middle school and the elementary school went on a bowling trip. We left at about 9:15 AM and came back at about 12:30 PM. While we were at the bowling alley, they put on music and a cool light show. The bowling balls were neon colors and the black light lit up the bowling balls, pins and lanes. All the students had a great time. Most of the students were allowed to bring $5 to spend on little snacks and caffeine free soda pop and or fries. It was a great winter field trip.
We have been reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins aloud in class. It is very exciting. Katniss Everdeen is the main character. She is very good at hunting. In the games she has to fight for her life. She has to take care of herself. If you are looking for a good book, The Hunger Games is it!
Review of The Hunger Games by: Jakob
Art by: Dakota
In Art class we made book covers. We used lots of color on the spine, back cover and the front cover. Next, we filled in all the flaps. We then put pictures on the front and back cover; it was a lot of fun making the book covers. Also, there was some writing on the front and back covers about the author and book review on the back cover. We all had a great time making the book covers for The Wizard of Oz.
Out of This World! By: Josh
In science, we learned about planets. We worked with a partner to research a planet. Then we created a big mural in the hallway of the solar systems. We also had a test on the planets. I had to study hard for it but I passed it. I liked learning about the Solar System.
Basic Math, By:Tim
In the basic Math class right now we are learning about scientific notations. This shows Mr. Craig where we are at for our Math level. The basic Math class is getting more advanced. Over the last few weeks we have been in Chapter 3; where we have been adding and subtracting signed numbers.
In our Science class we have been doing a Biome project. It's on the Deciduous Forests, Coniferous Forests, and the Rainforests in which we have to draw faunas(animals) and floras(plants) that are native to that specific forest. Other things we have learned are biotic factors, abiotic factors, producers, consumers, decomposers, biospheres, communities, populations, species, and organisms.
Algebra 1, By:Caleb
This quarter there are two students learning Algebra 1. We have been doing Absolute-Value functions as of last week. Before we were working together on solving compound inequalities. We also worked on parallel and perpendicular lines, linear functions, and graphs. Also, rate of changes and slope intercept form.
We have been learning about the roaring 20s here at Leap. Things like flappers and bootleggers and who was the president and how alcohol was illegal in the 1920s. Even though people continued to drink it anyways. We also had to do a presentation on the presidents from the past. You had your choice to do a power point or a pamphlet. I was not present to hear the presentations. I chose to do Thomas Jefferson. We had to talk about their early life and the important things about them.
We talked about risk taking. We were asked if we would take a risk, which was take 10 basketball shots from half court and if you made one you were given 20 million dollars, but,if you missed the shot you had to go to jail for 2 years. We also talked about our values, we did our daily thinking error sheets and also went over goal settings. We had to set a realistic goal that we had to accomplish by Friday, March 6th, 2015. To remember this goal we taped it to our desks and kept track of the goal we had chosen. We also did pamphlets on bullying and drugs in which we worked in groups. We did understanding problems that make us angry and/or frustrated.
